The Classical Trail, Acropolis and Plaka (Half Day - Morning)

The Acropolis of Athens, the best-known acropolis of the ancient world, is regarded as the finest example of ancient Greek art and architecture. Built from 447 to 432 BC, under the leadership of Pericles, on a limestone hill that rises about 150 m above sea level, the Acropolis dominates the city of Athens. It houses the remains of the Parthenon, a magnificent temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and noted for its perfect simplicity of design and the harmony of its proportions; the Propylaea the monumental marble gateway and the main entrance to the Acropolis; the Erechtheum, a temple famous for the perfection of its details; and the Temple of Athena Nike.

The sanctuary of Sounion is first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaus stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman. Apart from its historical importance, Sounion offers one of the most breathtaking views in the Attica region. Late in the afternoon Sounion is painted by the wonderful colours of the sunset and the landscape of ancient ruins perched above the sea is simply majestic.

Mycenae (Full Day)

This most important archaeological site of Greece is witness of a great ancient civilization, the Mycenaean civilization, which was born in the Peloponnese region and thrived in the later Bronze period (1350-1200 B.C.). Soon it spread its presence throughout Greece. The Acropolis of Mycenae is surrounded by the great Cyclopean Walls apart from the southside, which is naturally protected by a stiff gorge. Other findings include the Palace, the Hall of the Throne, the central Lions' Gate, residences and big vaulted tombs. One of the most significant and glorious vaulted tombs is the Treasure of Atreas, which was built in 1250 B.C. Parts of its decoration, acquired by Lords Sligo and Elgin, are exhibited in museums abroad, mainly in London and Paris.

Delphi is best-known for the oracle at the sanctuary of Apollo, a major temple of the god of prophecy and patron of philosophy and the arts. Today Delphi is a charming village with spectacular scenery and the ancient remains within the boundaries of the modern town.
